BE in electrical, civil in demand

Chennai: Electrical-electronics and civil engineering seem to be the most sought after programmes among engineering aspirants this year since those who opt for computer engineering and IT seem to come up against a lack of placement opportunities. Open category seats in the top 50 engineering colleges got filled up within a week of counselling.
An analysis done by eminent academician and career counsellor Jayaprakash A. Gandhi revealed that most students from the Open Category (OC) preferred to go to the top 50 colleges in the state.
“There is no OC seat left in these top engineering colleges. The cut- off for computer science and IT in Tier-I engineering colleges has come down by four or five marks,” Gandhi said.
Elaborating further on this year’s trend, the career counsellor noted that if the current trend continued, seats in electrical-electronics engineering and civil engineering would get filled up much earlier than mechanical and electronics & communication engineering as the former had fewer seats.
“Students are not looking only at colleges, but the courses on offer too as they are particular about placement. In the past, students joined colleges in a particular city; now, that has become a thing of the past as students have joined colleges in various cities,” he added.
