Chennai to get Krishna water from July 2

Chennai: Chennaiites can hopefully expect water supply to better in a week from now. Krishna water has finally come to their rescue. Andhra Pradesh has agreed to release Krishna water from Sunday, senior TN government sources told DC.

A senior WRO (Water resource organization) officer, who was a part of a high-level official delegation which visited Ubbalamadagu on Friday to review the repair works in the canal, said AP would release water from Kandaleru from June 30.

“Initially, they will release 1,000 cusecs. Of which, 500 cusecs will reach Chennai. We will use 300 cusecs to meet the city’s needs and the remaining 200 cusecs will help stabilize surface storage in the city reservoirs,” the official said allaying fears of acute water shortage from mid-August.

Kandaleru reservoir, from where Krishna water will  be released to TN, currently has 12.48tmcft. Water release will be closely monitored and regulated at Ubbalamadagu as only a temporary canal has been developed there and permanent repair will be done before September. The city’s reservoirs, Poondi, Puzhal, Cholavaram and Chembarambakkam, currently store only 1.535tmcft, against their total capacity of 11.057tmcft.

Chennai metro water had to cut down the city’s supply from 830mld to 529mld owing to steep fall in water capacity in the city reservoirs since summer last.
