Chennai: Four incidents of students violence were reported in the city since Thursday night. In the four incidents, one sub-inspector and a student of New College were injured and admitted to hospital, while two engineering students were arrested.
On Friday, around 4.30 pm, two groups of students from Pachchaiyappa’s College and New College clashed in front Chennai Central railway station. “Four students were injured in the incident and one hospitalised. In another two hours’ time, a new gang of students from New College reached the same place, creating a flutter again. Seven of them were detained,” police sources said.
Earlier in the day, two groups of students form Presidency College clashed inside the college premises after a boy, travelling in one bus route (27 H) talked to a girl travelling in another bus route (6D). Because of timely police intervention, violence was averted.
On Thursday night, two drunken students of a private engineering college were arrested for allegedly assaulting a probationary sub-inspector going home, on Nelson Manickam Road.
Syed Moinudeen, 27, attached to the law and order wing of Aminjikarai police station, was passing through the road where he spotted a duo riding a bike with a damaged number plate. Though he asked them to stop, the two continued to speed. Syed then intercepted the two-wheeler and snatched the keys.
The two identified themselves as Rajesh and Karthikeyan, doing fourth-year BE. Karthikeyan allegedly punched Syed on the face when the policeman alerted the patrol vehicle. Some corporation sanitary workers saw the incident and helped to shift SI to the hospital.
After drinking, Rajesh of TP Chathiram, offered to drop Karthikeyan at a railway station. They had folded the number plate to escape detection.
