Krrish 3 trailer crosses 4m mark in 4 days on social networks

Bollywood seems to be taking over YouTube in a big way. The trailer for Hrithik Roshan’s upcoming superhero flick Krrish 3 has already garnered four million views in four days on YouTube.

The two-minute long trailer was released amidst much fanfare in Monday and crossed a million views by Tuesday. It managed to cross the three million views mark in under 36 hours as well. Given the craze of superhero films and Roshan’s fan-following, the feat seems interesting. The movie will take off from where Krrish, which was released in 2006, ended. While we have no clue about what happened to Krrish 2, the latest iteration in the Koi Mil Gaya series will see a release in Diwali.

Krrish 3 is not alone, other upcoming big releases like Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbaai Dobaara (we had to re-check the spelling several times) and Chennai Express have seen over a couple of million views on YouTube within a month of their releases. Other smaller flicks like John Abraham’s Madras Café and Shuddh Desi Romance have seen a huge number of views days after their release.

Bollywood seems to have woken up to social media in a great way, taking Indian popular culture online. Movies including Krrish 3, Aamir Khan’s Talaash and Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger have all released digital posters to promote the films on YouTube. A digital poster looks pretty much like a normal one you’ll find on your neighbouring public toilet wall, but it will have a vibrant background that looks like a movie.

Film stars are also now conducting video chats just before movie releases, not only creating a buzz around their upcoming releases but also driving the social media engagement up for them. They’re also looking beyond engagement on just Facebook and embracing platforms like Twitter and Instagram to interact during releases as well as giving sneak-peeks into the film’s making.

While this seems like a great start for newer releases to learn what clicks with Bollywood fans on the social media, it might be a while before Bollywood can follow Hollywood’s footsteps to really engage the social sphere with an upcoming release. We can ask our film stars questions live on chat now, but it may be a while for production houses to hit on a formula that will click with audiences on social media here and abroad.
